In a heart-rending incident, three members of a family committed suicide by consuming poison in Bogadi near here last night.
The deceased have been identified as Mangalamma (48), wife of Shivanna, her son Bhyrava (28) and daughter Lakshmi (22), wife of Swamy.
They allegedly ended their lives in their house behind Government School on Bogadi. Lakshmi is survived by two sons Preetham, 7, and Varun, 3. Her husband Swamy is said to be the main reason behind the trio taking the extreme step. The incident came to light when a neighbour Anitha reportedly went to the house of Mangalamma at about 6 am today.
Preetham opened the door for Anitha who found the three persons lying dead. She then informed neighbours who in turn alerted the Police.
Lakshmi, who was married to Swamy 7 years ago, was being constantly ill-treated by her husband who had turned into an alcoholic two years ago. Swamy, who owns a chicken stall in Bharathi Nagar, is said to have been assaulting Lakshmi and two children almost everyday. Attempts to reconcile the couple went in vain, according to neighbours.
Lakshmi, apparently fed up with her husband's ill-treatment, is said to have left for her parents' house along with her two children on Jan. 29.
Her father Shivanna, also said to be an alcoholic and totally non-chalant about his family affairs, was reportedly sleeping outside the house when the family members consumed poison last night.
