Apple unveils new tablet computer, the iPad

Apple Inc CEO Steve Jobs took the wraps off the highly anticipated "iPad" tablet and pitched it at a surprisingly low price aiming to bridge the gap between smartphones and laptops.
Jobs, who returned to the helm last year after a much-scrutinized liver transplant, took the stage at a packed theater on Wednesday and showed off a sleek, half-inch thick tablet computer with a 9.7-inch touchscreen.

The iPad can run movies, games and a gamut of applications. And taking on e-readers like Amazon's Kindle, Apple announced a digital bookstore called iBooks that will let users buy from publishers including Pearson Plc's Penguin, News Corp's HarperCollins, and Hachette Book Group.

"What once occupied half your living room can now be dropped in a bag," said NPD analyst Ned May. "It's pulling together a variety of needs (in) a universal entertainment device."

The iPad will sell from late March for as low as $499 for 16 gigabytes of storage. An extra $130 is needed to equip it with third-generation wireless capability.

"Pricing is very aggressive, so it's pretty positive from a mass adoption perspective. It was about $200 lower than what I was expecting," said Brian Marshall, an analyst with Broadpoint Amtech.

Other analysts had speculated that the tablet may cost as much as $1,000.

Shares of Apple rose to as high as $210.58 after the pricing news, up 5.5 percent from their session low. The stock closed up 0.94 percent at $207.88 on Nasdaq, within reach of its all-time high of $215.59 logged on Jan 5.

Apple announced a data plan with AT&T Inc, which appeared to have beaten out Verizon Wireless for the deal. .

Ethiopian airliner crashes after takeoff from Beirut

An Ethiopian Airlines plane with 90 people on board crashed into the Mediterranean sea shortly
after taking off from Beirut international airport in the early hours of Monday, airport sources said.
The Boeing 737-800 disappeared off the radar some five minutes after taking off, shortly after its scheduled departure time of 2:10am (0010 GMT), during a thunderstorm and heavy rain, the sources said. It was heading for Addis Ababa.

Eight-two passengers and eight crew were aboard, according to the plane's manifest, the sources said. About 50 passengers were Lebanese nationals, three with dual nationalities: British, Canadian and Russian. Most of the others were Ethiopians.

According to one source, residents on the coast saw a "ball of fire" crashing off Na'ameh village, a few kilometres (miles) south of the Lebanese capital. Senior Lebanese officials and some family members of Lebanese passengers headed to Rafik Hariri International Airport after news of the crash. The plane had flown in from Addis Ababa earlier in the night, the sources said.

State-owned Ethiopian Airlines, which could not immediately be reached for comment, has positioned itself as a major player in international air traffic in Africa and has recently expanded its Asian network. Last Friday it announced an order for 10 of Boeing's Next-Generation 737-800s for a total price of $767 million.

The 55-year-old director has been awarded for the inspiring message in his Golden Globe-winning blockbuster film 'Avatar', which stresses the interconnectedness of nature and the importance of treating all living beings with respect and dignity, no matter how 'strange' or 'alien', PETA's website said.

"We hope viewers will come away from Avatar with a new way of looking at the world around them and the way we treat our fellow earthlings," PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange said in a statement.

Shallow quake strikes Solomon Islands

A shallow 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands in the western Pacific on Sunday, seismologists said, but there was no immediate tsunami warning or reports of damage.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was measured at a depth of about 10 kilometres and struck 160 kilometres southeast of the town of Gizo at 1419 GMT Sunday.

Like much of the Pacific, the Solomons regularly experience earthquakes.

A string of earthquakes rocked the western Solomon Islands earlier in the month, with the largest of 7.2 causing a tsunami estimated at eight feet.

Around 1,000 people -- almost a third of the population -- are believed to have been left homeless on Rendova island due to earthquake and tsunami damage.

In April 2007, an 8.0-magnitude earthquake in the western Solomons triggered a tsunami that killed more than 50 people and displaced thousands. Gizo harbour lost most of its wharves and jetties in the quake and subsequent tsunami.

Osama claims Dec 25 US plane plot, warns Obama of fresh attacks.

Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden claimed responsibility for the Christmas Day airline bombing attempt in Detroit, attempt in Detroit, in a audio message
Sunday, and vowed further attacks on the US.

The message suggests that bin Laden wants to show he remains in direct command of al-Qaida's many branches around the world.

In the short recording carried by the Al-Jazeera Arabic news channel, bin Laden addressed President Barack Obama saying the attack was a message similar to that of Sept. 11 and more attacks against the US would be forthcoming.

"The message delivered to you through the plane of the heroic warrior Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was a confirmation of the previous messages sent by the heroes of the Sept. 11," he said.

"America will never dream of security unless we will have it in reality in Palestine," he added. "God willing, our raids on you will continue as long as your support for the Israelis continues."

On Christmas Day, Nigerian national Abdulmutallab attempted to blow up the Northwest Airlines flight he was sitting on as it approached Detroit Metro Airport. But the bomb he was hiding in his underwear failed to explode.

He told federal agents shortly afterward that he had been trained and instructed in the plot by al-Qaida operatives in Yemen.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula originally took credit for the attack, but by issuing this message, bin Laden seems to be indicating that he himself is ordering attacks, rather than just putting his seal of approval on events afterward.

Analysts had previously suggested that al-Qaida's offshoots in North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and elsewhere were operated independently from bin Laden, who is believed to be somewhere in Afghanistan-Pakistan border region.

There was no way to confirm the voice was actually that of Bin Laden, but it resembled previous recordings attributed to him.

In the past year, bin Laden's messages have concentrated heavily on the plight of the Palestinians in attempt to rally support across the region.

Many analysts believe that bin Laden is worried about Obama's popularity across the Middle East with his promises to withdraw from Iraq and personal background, so the al-Qaida leader is focusing on the close US-Israeli relationship.

The suffering of the Palestinians, especially in the blockaded Gaza Strip where 1,400 died during an Israeli offensive there last year, angered many in the Arab world.

Israeli foreign ministry spokesman, Andy David, dismissed the latest al-Qaida message and its attempt to link Israel with attacks on the US

"This is nothing new, he has said this before. Terrorists always look for absurd excuses for their despicable deeds," he said.

The last public message from bin Laden appears to have been on Sept. 26, when he demanded that European countries pull their troops out of Afghanistan. The order came in an audiotape that also warned of "retaliation" against nations that are allied with the United States in fighting the war.

New power supply cable for Isles to be built in 2012

The Zanzibar government yesterday disclosed that the project to lay-down a new sub-marine cable for power supply to the Isles from Tanzania Mainland will be completed in 2012, after the US government reduced the project implementation timeframe.

This was said by Isles Minister for Water, Construction, Energy and Lands Mansour Yussuf Himid, when responding to questions by Members of the House of Representatives here yesterday.

He said previously, the project was set for completion by 2013, but the Isles government requested the US Government to reduce the timeframe due to power problems facing Zanzibar.

The minister told the House that the tendering process had been floated and would be opened on February 19, this year.

Himid said already various companies had applied for the implementation of the long-awaited project adding that the financier of the project, Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), would go through all processes of picking the winner from the bidding firms.

The new power supply route would have the capacity of 100MW from the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (Tanesco), he said, adding that the cable would pass under the Indian Ocean from Kiromono Cape on the Mainland to Fumba in Zanzibar.

Zanzibar spends 1.2bn/- every month in power expenses from the Mainland, however Isles customers have been living without hydro-electric power supply since December last year, after a key electric device exploded at Fumba main power station.

Majambazi wacharuka, waua watu 14 Ukerewe, waliteka kisiwa

'Tens of thousands' killed in Haiti quake

Haitian President Rene Preval said estimates of the death toll in the devastating earthquake in capital Port-au- Prince could easily be in the tens of thousands, while other officials said more than 100,000 may have perished.

'Up to now I've heard 50,000, I've heard 30,000. Let's say, it's too early to give a number,' Preval told broadcaster CNN, conceding that any sort of official estimate was extremely difficult. 'I am still trying to understand myself the magnitude of the event.'

Earlier, he had told The Miami Herald that thousands may have been killed in the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that rocked the country Tuesday afternoon, and issued an appeal for world assistance. The damage was centred in and around the capital Port-au-Prince, home to about 1.9 million people.

Figures for the number of dead remain murky as the government tries to assess the damage.

Speaking on CNN, Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said: 'I believe that we are well over 100,000' dead, based on the number of buildings that have collapsed.

The UN mission in Haiti said Wednesday that the country suffered 'massive and broad' destruction from the devastating earthquakes which may result in large number of casualties.

Fifty to 100 UN staff remained unaccounted for a day after the earthquake, said Vicznezo Pugliese, spokesman for the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). Separate reports say the dead included soldiers from Brazil, China and Jordan.

The end death toll could amount to the largest number of deaths ever for any UN single mission. UN officials warned that the situation remained fluid because the quake and its aftershocks had cut off communication lines between UN headquarters in New York and the mission in Haiti.

Pugliese said hotels, hospitals, schools and the national prison in Port-au-Prince all suffered extensive damage. Electricity was interrupted and water was in short supply.

'Casualties, which are vast, can only be estimated,' Pugliese said in a statement made available at UN headquarters in New York.

The missing staff had worked in the main MINUSTAH office, a six-storey concrete building which collapsed. Normally, between 200 and 250 UN staff worked in the main office building but many may have left before the quakes struck.

Ten other staff were still unaccounted for who worked for UN agencies like the UN Development Programme, some of whom were in hotels.

Hundreds of thousands of Haitians slept in the streets Tuesday night after the earthquake struck, fearful that their houses would collapse. UN soldiers and police patrolled Port-au-Prince since the earthquake to maintain order and security.

The UN Security Council held a minute of silence before it met Wednesday and issued a statement expressing 'deepest sympathy and solidarity' to Haitians killed or affected by the catastrophe.

The 15-nation council also voiced support for the government of Haiti and called on UN members to assist the country in rescuing the survivors.

John Holmes, the top UN coordinator for humanitarian emergency, said there was no 'reliable information at the moment'.

The earthquake with magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale struck the impoverished Caribbean nation Tuesday right before 5 p.m. local time.

Holmes said a Chinese search and rescue team had arrived in Port-au-Prince. There are 119 Chinese police in the UN mission in Haiti. Taiwan was sending 55 rescue workers and two search-and-rescue dogs, Taiwan officials said earlier Wednesday.

US and other country rescue teams were scheduled to reach Haiti in coming days.
